1Scope: paying a Proton subscription with BTC
This guide is about a Proton subscription payment, not a deposit into Proton Wallet. Treat wallet holdings and subscription credit separately; opening the wallet does not mean a subscription is paid. Decide on the service, billing term and account, then compare the available payment methods. We reviewed official documentation and have not completed a subscription payment.
2No Bitcoin at sign-up? Start with a free account
Proton says Bitcoin is unavailable during initial sign-up. Create a free account, go to Settings → All settings, open the upgrade or Compare all plans option, select a plan and review payment methods. Check that this is the account you intend to upgrade, and confirm the term and billing currency. If an expected option is missing, use official payment help rather than a recipient address supplied by someone else.
3Bitcoin mainnet, not USDT
Proton specifies Bitcoin mainnet and excludes Lightning and assets such as USDT. Check the full BTC network name at the sender; a cheaper representation of BTC on another network is not interchangeable. If you have no crypto, first check whether cards or PayPal suit your needs. If you hold USDT, do not enter it as a BTC amount. Evaluate conversion and transfer costs before changing assets.
4Use this payment’s address and amount
After choosing Bitcoin, use the BTC amount and recipient details displayed for this payment. Start again for each payment: Proton warns against reusing previous QR codes or addresses. Compare the invoice with the wallet preview: asset, network, address, BTC due and fee. Never copy tutorial amounts or treat a dollar-denominated balance estimate as the BTC amount owed.
5Budget differently for exchange and wallet funds
Funds on an exchange: check Bitcoin-mainnet withdrawal availability, minimum, fee and receiving amount, as well as whether the merchant accepts the chosen sending method. Withdrawal processing and blockchain confirmation are separate stages. Funds in a wallet: check that spendable BTC covers both payment and miner fees. If you first withdraw to the wallet, budget for both transfers. An exchange fee is not a replacement for the wallet’s final network-fee estimate.
6Waiting for a transaction: check before resending
If the page is waiting for a transaction, confirm that sending succeeded and retain the transaction ID. Then check blockchain confirmation and the Proton account separately. Do not send again just because the interface has not updated. For an unrecognized payment, incorrect amount or reused address, contact official Proton support with the date, amount, transaction ID and relevant account details. Share these privately through official channels, not a public invoice page.
7BTC is not automatically collected next period
Proton does not automatically collect Bitcoin payments and recommends paying at least 24 hours ahead. Add the next due date to your calendar and check subscription credit in advance. Fund according to your needs instead of holding a large prepayment merely to save a step. Before changing or canceling a plan, check its terms for effective dates and treatment of remaining credit.
8Why is an invoice unpaid when I have credits?
Check the amount and currency under Subscription → Credits. Proton credit applies only to payments in that currency. It is used automatically for the next subscription payment, but an existing unpaid invoice needs manual credit application. Check this before sending more BTC. When switching paid plans, unused time can become credit shown as Proration. Pay attention to the adjusted total. Canceling to the free plan follows different rules; remaining days do not by themselves establish a cash refund.
9FAQ: is Proton Wallet required?
Should I install Proton Wallet just because of its name? The task is a subscription payment. What matters is matching the sending method, Bitcoin mainnet and invoice requirements. Does sending prove the plan is active? Return to the account, check the subscription and invoice status, then confirm the features you need are available. Why not immediately buy crypto? If an existing card or another method is convenient, compare total cost and future renewal handling before choosing Bitcoin.
